The White Tower and it's history
The White Tower is the hallmark of Thessaloniki. In the past it was the southeast tower of the city’s fortification. Built around the late 15th century after the siege of the Greeks by the Turks and replaced a Byzantine tower that was previously there. Characteristic of the White Tower is that it has changed names several times. In the 18th century it was called "Fortress of Kalamaria" and in the 19th century 'Tower of Janissaries" and "Tower of Blood". The last two names were given as the White Tower was used as a prison and the walls were painted with blood by the frequent execution of prisoners by the Janissaries. Its current name was given by an offender who painted the whole tower white in order to gain his freedom , and thus came the name of "White Tower". You could rent a car for your convenience.
